ATHENS, West Virginia - The Bluefield State women's basketball team lost to Concord University in Athens Tuesday night, 56-43.
It was a tough loss against the undefeated Mountain Lions.
The Big Blue started strong.
After the first Concord bucket, the women went on a run that saw leads of 7-2, 11-4, and finally, 14-6, at the 3:19 mark of the first quarter.
Concord finished the quarter on an 8-0 run of their own to pull ahead, 16-14.
The second quarter belonged to the Mountain Lions. They outscored the Big Blue 18-8 and went into the locker room with a twelve-point lead at 34-22.
The start of the second half brought a flicker of hope when
Alexus Tucker hit a three at the 8:40 mark to cut Concord's lead to nine.
But the Big Blue went cold for the next five minutes, while the Lions stretched their lead to eighteen and ended the quarter at 45-27.
The women refused to quit, however.
They fought the Lions neck-and-neck through the final ten minutes and outscored the home team 9-2 in the last six minutes of the game.
After the game
, Coach Paul Davis had this to say,
"I'm disappointed. We crumbled in the second quarter and never really recovered. We have a lot of work to do. We cannot afford to dig a hole for ourselves. We're just not deep enough for that."
Katrina Davis led the Big Blue with 11 points on 3-11 shooting. She added four rebounds and two steals in 36 minutes.
Dani Janutolo came off the bench to score ten points. She also grabbed five rebounds in 25 minutes.
Azariah Binford played the entire game, scoring nine points. She grabbed five rebounds and was a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.
Alexus Tucker also scored nine points in 39 minutes. She was 3-6 from the three-point line.
Londen Coleman led the Big Blue with six rebounds. She added four points in 22 minutes.
Overall, the team shot 13-56 for 23%.
They were 6-25 for 24% from the three-point line.
And 11-14 for 79% from the free throw line.
They were outrebounded by the taller Mountain Lions 29-20.
