Mission and Philosophy

BSU ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT:

The Athletic Department will provide students with the opportunity to participate in an intercollegiate athletic program. During competition for a varsity athletic team for Bluefield State University, the student will gain leadership responsibilities, social, cultural, and physical growth as an individual. With this extracurricular experience, the student-athlete will have the possibility to enjoy the total college experience. With the student- athlete having a total college experience this will help for future careers.

BSU ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY:

Bluefield State University Intercollegiate Athletic Program is an integral part of the institution's total educational mission. Ten sports (five men/five women) offer diverse opportunities accommodating the needs and varying interests of students participating.

The college has a membership in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), as well as Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The philosophy of Bluefield State Athletics embraces the concepts of the "student-athlete' being a 'student" first, as well as, the principles of gender equity and requirements of Title IX. The physical and mental welfare of the student-athlete is of the highest importance. Fair play and sportsmanship are emphasized along with strict compliance with the rules and regulations of the USCAA and the NCAA.
