BLUEFIELD - The Bluefield State wrestling team lost their home opener at Ned E. Shott Gym to the number 18 ranked team in the nation, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Sunday afternoon.
"Even though the overall team result was not what we wanted, we did show signs of our potential as a young team competing against a nationally ranked foe. We were able to get a few wins against some really good competition and we will continue to develop our craft as the season progresses," said Head Coach Blaze Shade.
Jaden Berner led the Big Blue in 157 with a pinfall over UNCP's Dante Williams in a total time of 2:57. This was Berner's first match of the season and earned six points for the Big Blue.
Caleb Fritz also defeated Shane Chavis in (141) with a minor, 6-1.
DaShawn Cosby took (149) with a minor over Joey Perez, 7-3.
Justin Fritz gave the Big Blue their final three points with a minor over Garrett Hill in (174).
"History was made today and we can't wait to make our next home event the first home dual meet victory in school history!" said head coach Shade.

The Big Blue will have a short week of practice before traveling to the University of Indianapolis for the Midwest Classic. The tournament is a two-day meet set to start on Saturday, Dec. 18 History against the University of North Carolina Pembroke. The first match is set for 10:00 a.m.
