Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball took down West Virginia Wesleyan College 50-45 on Thursday at Ned E. Shott Gymnasium.
Both Katrina Davis and Azariah Binford led the scoring for the Big Blue with 12 apiece. Dani Janutolo added eight rebounds, eight points and five steals.
The Big Blue got on the board first after Janutolo forced the turnover and took it the other way for a three-point play and again off a layup by Katrina Davis. The Big Blue built up a lead of seven after a three from Rori Cox before WVWC cut the lead to four going into the second quarter.
The Bobcats opened the second quarter with back-to-back layups to even the score at 11. The Big Blue offense took over in the second half scoring 12 consecutive points to take the 26-16 point lead. The Bobcats scored one with 13 seconds to cut the lead to single digits, but a layup from Binford put the Big Blue into the half with the 28-18 advantage.
The Bobcats scored the first five points of the third quarter to pull within five, but the Big Blue answered with seven in a row to extend their lead 35-23. Gabrielle Thomas extended the Big Blue lead to 13 after completing the and one bucket. A trip to the line for the Bobcats with 12 seconds in the third would take the Big Blue into the final quarter with the 11 points advantage. The Bobcats cut the double-digit deficit to seven in the final three minutes. The Bobcats would score with 3 seconds left to pull within five, but could not overcome the Big Blue.
