Baseball Drops Opening Weekend Series to Anderson

ANDERSON, South Carolina -  Bluefield State baseball gets swept in a three-game series against Anderson university to open the season.
Game 1: After shutting out The Big Blue in the top half of the inning, The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after third baseman Brayden Owens drove in Kye Andress. 
The Big Blue answered back with a run of their own on an RBI single by Garret Hladileck driving in the first baseman Ty Sizemore. 
The Trojans added another run in the third inning by a fielder's choice which brought in J. LeGrand giving the Trojans a 2-1 lead. Bluefield State gave up another run in the bottom of the eighth on another fielder's choice which brought in J. Van Ness. Heading into the bottom of the ninth trailing 3-1 the Big Blue battled at the plate scoring two after a throwing error bringing in Varela-Payne and a sacrifice fly by JR McRee bringing in Ortega to tie the game, 3-3.
As a result, the game went into extra innings. The Trojans would score a run on an RBI single up the middle by Andress giving Anderson University a 4-3 victory over Bluefield State.
 
Game 2: Anderson University Trojans took an early lead scoring three runs in the first two innings on a ground out into second base, an RBI double, and an error by Bluefield State's second baseman. 
The Big Blue answered back in the top of the third scoring two in the inning, Roman Moore scored on a passed ball and Tyler Fenwick scored on a sacrifice fly by Payne. 
The Trojans added two more runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI ground out scoring Van Ness and on an error by the first baseman which brought in Andress giving them a 5-2 lead heading in the fifth inning. 
Bluefield state would add one run in the fifth inning on an error by the Trojans center fielder allowing Cole Cotee, 5-3. 
Both teams were scoreless in the sixth inning. Heading into the seventh trailing 5-3 freshman Erik Romero tied the game with a two-RBI single scoring Brayden Merrick and Jordan Valera-Payne tying the game at 5-5. 
In the bottom of the seventh J Young hit a walk-off triple scoring Fox to end the game with a final score of 6-5.

Game 3: The Trojans Took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after two-RBI singles and a wild pitch. 
The Trojans would strike again in the fifth inning when N. Vella stole home giving them a 4-0 lead over the Big Blue. The Trojans added four more runs, one in the seventh inning and three in the eighth inning, 8-0 lead over the Big Blue. 
The Big blue would add one run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Brantley Durham driving in CJ Cooper, making the score 8-1 as the final score.
The Big Blue will travel to Cary, North Carolina for a four-game series. 
Bluefield State will face Lincoln on Friday, February 11. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m. 
Saturday, Feb. 12 and 13 the Bg Blue will take on Post University in two single games.
