Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell to UVA Wise 69-58 on Saturday at Ned Shott Gymnasium.
Rori Cox led the scoring for the Big Blue with 15 points followed by Londen Coleman with 14. Katrina Davis, Dani Janutolo, and Gabrielle Thomas each came away with seven rebounds to lead the rebounding for the Big Blue.
The Cavaliers pulled away early, scoring the first 13 points before back-to-back buckets by Cox put the Big Blue on the board. The Cavaliers maintained the double-digit lead to go into the second quarter ahead 23-11. The Big Blue would score 15 in the second quarter, but the Cavaliers offense put up 19 to go into the half with 16-point lead over the Big Blue.
The Big Blue struck first in the second half with a three from Essence Cowan followed by a layup by Janutolo to cut the Cavalier lead to 11. At the three-minute mark, the Big Blue scored seven consecutive points to pull within six. A trip to the line for the Cavaliers put them ahead by eight, but a three from Davis put the Big Blue within five. In the final minute of the third, the Cavaliers added two followed by a free throw from Big Blue Coleman to go into the final quarter with the Cavaliers on top 52-46.
After the Cavaliers opened the fourth with a bucket, the Big Blue scored nine in a row to take their first lead of the night. The Cavaliers answered with a run of their own to go up by eight. Back-to-back free throws for Coleman added three for the Big Blue to pull within five. The Cavaliers closed out the quarter with six consecutive points to come away with the 69-58 victory over the Big Blue.
