Danville, VA - Enrique Sanchez was the winner of the most-falls award at the Cougar Open hosted by Averett University on Sunday.
The Florida native opened the day with a first-period pin. After falling in a close match in the second round, Sanchez cranked out four more falls, including two in the first period, on his way to one of the two bronze medals awarded at each weight.
Luke Roberts, wrestling at 125 lbs., won a pair of matches in the consolation round, by scores of 12-7 and 11-4. Freshman Jacob Latorre began his collegiate career with a first-period pin with a nearside cradle, and fellow freshman Josh Sergent used a number of tilts and turns to score a first-period technical fall over his Marymount University opponent. Junior Sherman Franklin used a cradle and some strong upper body wrestling to earn a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks at 174 lbs. Jordan Ruedi started the day with a strong performance at 197, using a dominant ride and a number of turns to score a tournament opening fall.
"It was good to be back and competing. Practicing against each other every day can only teach you so much. You need to compete in order to know where you are and what you need to work on," said head coach Sam Gardner. "We competed hard today, and I saw some good things and things we can build upon. Enrique performed well. He's fast, flexible and aggressive, and all of that pays off in pins in his favor. The young guys showed heart and toughness and a few tweaks could turn things around in their favor. I'm excited about the future of this program. We've got work to do, but we now know where we need to focus our energy in practice."
