Mars Hill, NC – Bluefield State University women's basketball took down Mars Hill 59-48 on Saturday.
The Big Blue got on the board first after a jumper from Alexyss Newman. The Lions answered with the next five points to take the lead, but a trip to the line for Jayla Sample pulled the Big Blue within one. With 35 seconds left in the first, a three by Azariah Binford put the Big Blue ahead by nine. A three by the Lions at the buzzer took the Big Blue into the second quarter with the 18-12 lead.
The Lions opened the second quarter with five points to cut the Big Blue lead to two. The Lions took the one-point lead with one minute left in the second, but a three from Katrina Davis took the Big Blue into the half with the 25-23 advantage.
The Lions took the lead the lead at the 7:24 mark, but a three from Gabrielle Thomas sparked a ten-point run for the Big Blue to take the lead. The Lions closed out the third with a run of their own to pull within five of the Big Blue.
The Big Blue reached their largest lead of the night after two good free throws from Shalance Montoya. Davis rounded out the scoring to seal the 58-48 victory for the Big Blue.
Jayla Sample led all scorers with 17 points in 25 minutes. Alexyss Newman led all players with 10 rebounds and added eight points.
