Athens, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell to Concord University 70-63 on Monday at the Carter Center.
Aerihna Afoa led all scorers with a season high of 24 points followed by Katrina Davis, Londen Coleman, and Rori Cox with nine apiece. Dani Janutolo added eight rebounds on the night.
The Big Blue struck first after a steal from Afoa and a layup from Janutolo. The Big Blue held the lead until the midway mark when Concord tied it at 12. The Mountain Lions took their first lead of the night with six consecutive points, but the Big Blue scored the final points of the first to go into the second quarter with the 21-19 advantage.
The Big Blue built a lead of four to open the second quarter, but the Mountain Lions evened the score at 25. After taking back the lead later in the quarter through a three-point play from Cox, the Mountain Lions would outscore the Big Blue 5-1 to go into the half with the 32-29 lead over the Big Blue.
The Mountain Lions extended their lead to eight in the first two minutes of the third. The Big Blue pulled within one twice in the remainder of the quarter and took the lead in the final minute after a trip to the line for Coleman to go into the final quarter with the one-point lead over the Mountain Lions.
In the final quarter, there were four ties before the Mountain Lions began to pull away from the Big Blue. After a three from Afoa at the 2:36 mark tied the score at 56 for the final time, the Mountain Lions would go on to outscore the Big Blue 14 – 7 in the final minutes to take the 70-63 victory over Bluefield State.
