Petersburg, VA – Bluefield State University women's basketball scored 113 in the First Round of the USCAA tournament in their 113-62 victory over Carlow University on Monday.
The Big Blue scored a season high of 18 threes by Essence Cowan and Aerihna Afoa with six apiece, Dani Janutolo with two, and Katrina Davis, Rori Cox, Alexus Tucker and Zaynah Robinson having one each.
Cowan led the Big Blue with 22 points followed closely by Afoa with 21. Londen Coleman came away with 18 with Janutolo adding 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Big Blue took the lead early, scoring 15 unanswered points in the first three minutes of play. Carlow University cut that lead to eight with 21 seconds left in the first quarter, but Davis answered with a midrange jumper to put the lead at 10 going into the second quarter.
Carlow opened the second quarter with three consecutive free throws to cut the lead to seven, but that was as close as they would get the rest of play. The Big Blue would go on to score 12 points in a row to build the 19-point lead over Carlow. Carlow would score the last point of the half to take the Big Blue into the half with the 42-25 lead.
The Big Blue would open the third quarter with 14 consecutive points to extend their lead to 31. Both teams would score back-and-forth buckets throughout the rest of the quarter to go into the final quarter with the Big Blue ahead 68-37.
The Big Blue would outscore Carlow 45-25 in the final quarter to take the 113-62 victory in the opening round of the USCAA tournament.
