Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University Baseball took down WVU Tech in a midweek match up 6-3 on Wednesday at Bowen Field.
After both teams going scoreless in the first, the Golden Bears struck first adding one in the second and another in the third. The Big Blue pulled with one after a homerun by Jordan Varela-Payne in centerfield. In the fourth, Curtis Ball drew the walk followed by a single through the left side by Garett Hladilek to move Ball to third. After Hladilek stole second, Sebastian Ortega homered to right field to take the 4-2 lead. The Golden Bears pulled within one in the seventh, but in the bottom of the inning the Big Blue added another after a double steal from Cole Cote and Varela – Payne. After back-to-back singles from Ball and Hladilek and a sacrifice bunt from Eric Green, Ball scored on a wild pitch to extend the Big Blue lead 6-3 and take the victory over WVU Tech.
Conner Elliott got the win for the Big Blue throwing four innings, giving up three hits, one walk and striking out three. Braeden Major earned the save for the Big Blue going two innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.
