Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball used a strong first quarter to take down Winston-Salem State University 61-53. The Big Blue improve to 10-5 (4-3 CIAA) and the Rams move to 6-10 (0-6 CIAA) on the year.
The Big Blue jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after three consecutive threes from Alexyss Newman (2) and Sincere Roberts. The Rams pulled within five at the 3:41 mark, but the Big Blue would score the next 11 out of 13 points to end the first quarter with the 23-9 lead. The Big Blue extended to their largest lead of the night midway through the second after a trip to the line for Newman 30-12. The Rams closed out the quarter with the last four points to cut the Big Blue lead to 13 going into the half.
Midway through the third, the Rams took their first lead of the night 36-35. The Big Blue answered with the next nine points to take the 44-36 lead. A trip to the line for the Rams cut the deficit to six going into the final quarter. The Big Blue would go on to outscore the Rams 17-15 in the fourth to hold off the Rams for the 61-53 victory.
Alexyss Newman led all players with 22 points and nine rebounds. Shalance Montoya came away with 15 points and six rebounds. Sincere Roberts added eight points, five assists and three rebounds.
