Bluefield, WV – Three Big Blue scored double figures in their loss against Concord, 85-72. The Big Blue moved to 2-3 on the year, with the Mountain Lions moving to 2-2.
The Mountain Lions quickly got on the board, scoring five points in the first two minutes to take the early lead. With three minutes left in the first quarter, a three-point play from Jayla Sample pulled the Big Blue within three. The Mountain Lions score the last four of the quarter to extend their lead 22-13.
Big Blue Azahrey Drayton-Gill scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but the Mountain Lions answered with a bucket of their own. Midway through the quarter, a layup by Jasmine Jenkins pulled the Big Blue within five. The Mountain Lions built their lead to nine with just under two minutes left. Jenkins sunk two free throws, but the Mountain Lions hit a jumper to take the 40-32 lead into the half.
The Mountain Lions built their lead to 13 two minutes into the third. Tianna Rhodes scored the next six points for the Big Blue to cut the deficit to seven. A free throw by Icesis Nwafor cut the Mountain Lion lead to five with 24 seconds left in the third, but a Mountain Lion layup took the Big Blue into the fourth down, 61-54.
The Big Blue opened the fourth with back-to-back points from Nwafor and Drayton-Gill to pull within three of Concord. With 5:52 left to play, the Mountain Lions pushed their lead 76-59. A three by Azariah Binford cut the lead to nine, but the Mountain Lions would go 4/4 from the line to take the 85-72 victory over the Big Blue.
Jenkins led the Big Blue with 22 points, followed by Rhodes with 14. Sample came away with a double-double, 11 points, and 11 rebounds.
