Raleigh, NC – Bluefield State University men's basketball drop a conference matchup against Shaw University 94-92. The Big Blue fall to 7-4 (1-1 CIAA) on the year with the Bears improving to 6-7 (2-1 CIAA).
After two minutes of play, Romeo Aquino put the first points on the board after going 2-3 from the line. The Bears scored the next six to take the lead, but a layup from Shainen Carter and two free throws from Aquino evened the score at six. The Bears built a 12-6 lead, but a three from Jordan Hinds midway through the half took back the lead for the Big Blue, 16-14. A trip to the line for the Bears with 7:15 left in the half extended their lead 30-19. The Big Blue scored six points later in the half to pull within two of the Bears (38-36). At the 1:55 mark, a layup by Aquino took back the lead for the Big Blue (41-40). The Bears would score 9 of the last 13 points to take the 49-45 advantage over the Big Blue into the half.
The Big Blue quickly tied it up at 49 out of the half after a jumper from Carter and a layup from Travon Cooper II, but the Bears answered with seven to take the lead 56-49. Midway through the half, the Bears extended their lead 75-62. Later in the half, Aquino converted on the four-point play to cut the Shaw lead, 92-88 with 1:32 left to play. Two free throws from Aqunio with 32 seconds remaining evened the score 92-92. The Bears had two free throws of their own with 24 seconds left to take down the Big Blue 94-92.
Hinds led all scorers with 36 points, six rebounds, two steals and one block. Aquino added 26 points, four rebounds, and two blocks. Williams came away with eight assists and six rebounds.
