Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball secured their first conference win of the season over Elizabeth City State University 68-66 on Saturday. The Big Blue improved to 8-9 (1-5 CIAA) with the Vikings falling to 8-8 (1-4 CIAA).
After ending the first quarter tied 17-17, the Big Blue held the Vikings to just nine points in the second quarter while scoring 16 of their own to take the advantage into the half. Midway through the second quarter, a layup from Andrea Robertson sparked a six-point run to give the Big Blue the 33-23 lead. The Vikings scored three to cut the Big Blue lead to seven.
The Big Blue came out of the half with back-to-back buckets from Tianna Rhodes and Azariah Binford to extend their lead to 11. The Big Blue had their largest lead of the night (14) after a steal from Jasmine Jenkins who found Azahrey Drayton-Gill for two. The Vikings outscored the Big Blue in the final three minutes of the third 7-2 to take the Big Blue into the fourth with the three-point lead.
With 45 seconds left, the Vikings battled back to even the score at 66. A late Vikings foul sent Jenkins and Jayla Sample to the line to secure the 68-66 victory over Elizabeth City State.
Sample led the Big Blue with 17 points with Binford, Jenkins, Drayton-Gill and Rhodes each adding nine each.
