Winston-Salem, NC – Bluefield State University women's basketball dropped a road contest at Winston-Salem State University, 81-78, in overtime. The Big Blue fell to 9-13 (2-9 CIAA) with the Rams moving to 6-15 (2-9 CIAA).
The Big Blue opened play with three free throws to take the early lead. A three by Azariah Binford at the 6:07 mark pushed the Big Blue lead to five. The Rams pulled within one, but Caiyiah Smith had back-to-back layups to take the five-point lead into the second. The Rams took the four-point lead with 1:27 left, but a layup from Jayla Sample cut the lead to two going into the half.
The Rams built an eight-point lead four minutes into the third, but a three from Smith sparked a 12-point run to take back the lead 50-46. The Rams closed the quarter with back-to-back layups to take the one-point lead into the fourth. The Rams built a 10-point lead midway through the half, but a jumper from Sample evened the score at 68 with 2:07 left in regulation. A layup by Jenkins with 40 seconds to go gave the Big Blue the one-point lead, but a late free throw for the Rams forced overtime.
The Big Blue took the early lead in overtime with a Sample free throw and a layup from Jenkins. The Rams tied it up at 77 and outscored the Big Blue 4-1 the rest of the way to take the 81-78 victory.
Jayla Sample led all scorers with 29 points and six assists. Jasmine Jenkins added 16 for the Big Blue with Caiyiah Smith coming away with 11.
