Winston-Salem, NC – Head Coach Scott Considine led the Bluefield State University baseball team to his first win as a head coach against Carolina University in the first game of the series.
Game One – 17-4 W
After a scoreless first inning, the Big Blue put four on the board to take the early lead. With the bases loaded, Anderson Moreno was hit by a pitch to bring home one, followed by a single to right field from Angel Martinez to bring home another. Andrew Scarberry collected two RBIs with a single to left field, pushing the Big Blue lead to four.
Caleb Roofe was hit by a pitch, followed by a Kevin Rodriguez single and a walk for Tyson Mickie to load the bases. Colton Roberts flew out to left field to bring home Roofe, and Moreno collected his second hit of the night to bring home Rodriguez. Martinez singled down the right-field line to clear the bases and extend the Big Blue lead to 8-0.
The Big Blue pushed their lead to nine after a double to left-center field by Diaz, scoring James Germosen. The Bruins added one in the fifth, but the Big Blue began to pull away, adding three in the sixth and five in the seventh. The Big Blue sealed the win with pitcher Jackson Harless striking out the final batter.
Grayson Peel earned the win on the mound for the Big Blue, throwing six innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, and striking out five.
Game Two – 4-2 L
Moreno led off with a double and later moved to third after a sacrifice bunt. The Big Blue got on the board after a single to right field from Scarberry brought home Moreno. The Bruins answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs to take the lead. Martinez evened the score in the third after a series of Bruin miscues.
The Bruins took back the lead in the third off two hits. They extended their lead in the sixth to secure the 4-2 victory over the Big Blue.
Jonah Brower picked up the loss, throwing 5.2 innings, giving up five hits (not "give" hits), four runs, four walks, and striking out three.
Game Three – 8-6 L
Down 3-0 going into the third, back-to-back Bruin errors and a single by Scarberry loaded the bases for the Big Blue. A Diaz grand slam to right field gave the Big Blue a 4-3 lead. The Bruins took back the lead, scoring three in the fourth and two in the fifth to go up 8-4.
A single through the left side started a Big Blue rally, with Germosen collecting two RBIs to pull within two of the Bruins. However, the Big Blue rally fell short, as they fell to the Bruins 8-6.
Will Ricketts took the loss for the Big Blue, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up six hits, eight runs, one walk, and striking out two. Roberts threw 1.2 innings, giving up only one hit and striking out one.
