Bluefield, WV. – Bluefield State returns to Mitchell Stadium Saturday afternoon to host Johnson C. Smith University for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the matchup also serving as the Gold Rush and Day of Giving.
The Big Blue heads into the game following a 20-7 road loss to Lincoln (Pa.). Bluefield State finished with 291 yards of offense while holding Lincoln to 289 and converted eight of 16 third-down attempts.
Johnson C. Smith enters the matchup at 3-1 after three consecutive victories over Albany State, Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State. The Golden Bulls have been effective on the ground, averaging more than 220 rushing yards per game.
Running back Fabian Duncan leads the JCSU rushing attack with 610 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Kamarro Edmonds has added 272 yards and two touchdowns. Through the air, the Golden Bulls have several options, including Reginald Daniel, Reggie Brigman and Brian Lane.
Bluefield State will look to counter with its own playmakers.
Julian Crawley recorded seven receptions for 85 yards against Lincoln and has already produced a 100-yard, two-touchdown performance this season against Livingstone.
On the ground,
Tydrez Clements led the Big Blue with 61 yards on seven carries against Lincoln, including a 36-yard run.
Justin McBean added 41 yards on 14 attempts.
Defensively, one of Bluefield State's biggest challenges will be slowing down JCSU's rushing attack and preventing explosive plays. Establishing the run offensively and keeping drives alive on third down will also be important for the Big Blue.
With alumni, students and supporters returning to Bluefield for Homecoming, Saturday gives the Big Blue an opportunity to earn an important conference victory in front of the home crowd. A complete four-quarter performance would make the afternoon at Mitchell Stadium even more memorable.
Kickoff: Saturday, Oct. 3 @ 1 p.m.
Location: Mitchell Stadium Bluefield, WV
Opponent: Johnson C. Smith University
