Luke Scherzer joined the Bluefield State University Baseball staff bringing a wealth of high-level playing and coaching experience, as well as a strong commitment to player development and pitching excellence.
Scherzer played collegiate baseball at Virginia Tech from 2014–2019 under Head Coach Patrick Mason and Pitching Coach John Szefc. During his career with the Hokies, he contributed both as a weekend starter and as a reliever/closer, throwing 154 innings and finishing with a 4.49 ERA, an 8–13 record, and 9 saves.
His playing experience also includes top-tier summer leagues. In 2015, he pitched for the Harwich Mariners in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, where he earned Cape Cod All-Star honors. He was also selected as an All-Star in the Valley League while playing for the Harrisonburg Turks.
After completing his collegiate playing career, Scherzer transitioned into coaching. He began as the Pitching Coach at WVU Tech during the 2019–2020 season. In 2021, he returned to his alma mater, Powhatan High School, serving as the Pitching Coach and Assistant Coach, continuing to refine his coaching philosophy and player development approach.
A native of Powhatan, Virginia, Scherzer enjoyed a standout high school career, earning All-State honors every year and leading Powhatan High School to a State Championship in 2012.
Scherzer holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminology from Virginia Tech.
