Bluefield, W.Va.— The Lady Blues have won 12 games in a row, pushing their record to 16-4 on the season. The Lady Blues defeated the University of Virginia-Wise Cavaliers in three sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-20) in the Ned E. Shott Gymnasium tonight.

The Lady Blues started out strong with a 5-0 lead while Alee Quint was on serve. They continued to push to a 10-3 lead causing the Cavaliers to call a timeout. The Lady Blues had a 16-9 lead, but the Cavaliers scored 3 points in a row to cut the lead. Late in the game, after a block assist by Sashane Watson and Brittney Deveaux and a kill by Deveaux, the Lady Blues took the first set, 25-14.
In the second set, the Cavaliers started out with a serving error and the Lady Blues rallied to a quick 6-1 start and pushed it to 10-3, causing a Cavaliers timeout. Late in the game, the Lady Blues pushed the lead to 22-9 after a Jessie Rehwald serving ace, but the Cavaliers scored 4 straight points to cut the lead 22-13. The Lady Blues closed the door though with a 25-16 win, taking a 2-0 lead.
The third set was close, both teams taking turns scoring points. The Lady Blues were up 5-3, but the Cavaliers came back scoring 4 straight points to take a 7-5 lead. The Lady Blues changed the score again to take an 11-9 lead.
Midway through, both teams were still battling, but the Lady Blues had the lead 16-12. After a short rally by the Cavaliers, the Lady Blues pushed the lead again after a kill by Brittney Deveaux, up 18-15. After another kill, the Lady Blues were up 20-18, but quickly changed to a 20-19 score after a serving error by the Lady Blues. After a block assists by Tanasia Blake and Brittany Bonamy, the Lady Blues took a 22-19 lead, causing the Cavaliers to call a timeout. The Lady Blues sealed the 25-20 win after a kill by Sashane Watson and took the match 3-0.
The Lady Blues had 41 kills and 7 serving aces compared to the Cavaliers' 23 kills and 2 serving aces.
Sophomore Brittney Deveaux had another excellent night with 9 kills with 0 errors on 12 attempts for a .750 attack percentage and 4 block assists. Junior Tyann Thomas (pictured) led the way with 13 kills with 3 errors on 21 attempts and added 5 digs and 2 block assists. Junior Tanasia Blake had the best attack percentage of the night with .833; she had 5 kills with 0 errors on 6 attempts and 2 block assists.
Sophomore Alee Quint had 31 set assists, 3 serving aces, and 1 dig. Sophomore Jessie Rehwald had 8 digs and 1 serving ace. Junior Thais Nogueira-Nunes had 4 digs and 2 serving aces.
The Lady Blues next match is on the road on Friday, Oct. 23rd against St. Augustine's University at 6:00 p.m. in Raleigh, NC.
