Box Score Bluefield, WV- The Big Blues pick up their second win of the season with a 70-49 victory over the Dragons of Virginia University-Lynchburg.
The ladies set the tone early by coming out and playing some good defense holding the dragons to 6 points in the quarter. The Blues were also efficient on the offensive side of the ball going 7-16 from the floor. Tierra Richberg and Jesslyn Fullerton were the top scorers for the team with 6 and 5 respectively. Things were looking good for the Blues as they were able to score consistently and not go on these long droughts that have hurt them so much in previous games.
The 2nd quarter started with a 15-6 Blues lead, but that lead quickly evaporated. The Dragons went 4-5 from downtown and crawled back into this game. Things started to get shaky for the Blues when the Dragons hit their 3rd 3 of the period and brought it to within 4 with just under 2 minutes to play in the quarter. Then came the Dragons last 3 of the quarter with 39 seconds left which game them a 25-24 lead going into half time.
But credit needs to be given to the Lady Blues as they did not cave in the second half. When the 3rd quarter started they came out and were even more efficient than in the 1st quarter. The team went 9-19 and tacked on 2 3's to score 25 points in the quarter, by far one of their best offensive quarters of the season. BSC took back the lead at the 6:30 mark in the quarter and never looked back. Janae Williams had a monster 10 points in the quarter and the Blues were able to take a 49-34 lead to the 4th quarter.
When the 4th quarter started you could tell that things were going the Big Blues way. The Blues were able to continue their solid defense from all night by forcing 7 turnovers in the period. VA-Lynchburg could not keep up as the Blues kept dumping the ball to the low post making their lay-ups. The Blues lead continued to grow and the game ended 70-49.
The Big Blues had 3 people reach the 20 point mark on the night. Tierra Richberg and Janae Williams both scored 20 and Janae was able to grab 9 rebounds. Tanasia Blake had 21 point for the game and added 13 rebounds to give her a double-double on the night.
