CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - The Bluefield State men's basketball team fell Saturday evening on the road to Johnson C. Smith in Brayboy Gymnasium, 98-94.
It was another tough road loss for the Big Blue as they are still winless on the road.Â
The Big Blue got off to a slow start. The Golden Bulls had a 10 point lead at the 17-minute mark, 15-5.Â
After about a 10-minute stretch, Jordan Hinds made it a one-point game after lay-up with an assist by Landry Palata. Ryan Stowers made one out of two free throws to tie it up with Golden Bulls, 29-29.Â
The Big Blue finally took the lead at the 3-minute mark with a rebound from Hinds. Palata had a fast break and a layup with an assist by Desmond Freeman, to put the Big Blue up, 37-35.Â
The last-minute of the second half was a battle. The Golden Bulls tied it up with a three-pointer by Stephen Sherrills with:20 left in the quarter. Jaaden Newell fouled to send Sherrills to the line to shoot two. Sherrills made one out of two to put the Golden Bulls up at the half, 45-44.Â
Most of the second half belonged to the Golden Bulls. The Golden Bulls had up to a nine-point lead at the 17-minute mark after a foul committed by Palata and two good free throws by Xavier Jones, 55-46.Â
The Big Blue cut the lead by two at the 14-minute mark with a three-pointer by Julio Pascual assisted by Hirotaka Ohashi. Down the stretch, Palata tied it up with a jumper, 71-71.Â
A dunk by Marquez Cooper at the 9-minute mark gave the Big Blue the lead, 73-71. Battling back and forth the Golden Bulls yet again took a nine-point lead at the 2-minute mark with a foul committed by Kesean Robinson and two good free throws by Jones, 92-83.Â
Cutting the lead once again down to three, the Big Blue couldn't regain a lead over the Golden Bulls. The last:15 of the game, Palata dunked it in the paint, 94-98. Which became the final score after the Big Blue couldn't put any more points on the board.Â
Jordan Hinds lead the Big Blue with 18 points on 9-14 shooting. He added six rebounds in 33 minutes.Â
Landry Palata and Desmond Freeman followed with 13 points. Palata missed a double-double by one adding 9 rebounds in 28 minutes.Â
Ryan Stowers also added 12 points in 19 minutes on 5-9 shooting.Â
Overall, the team shot 38-77 for 49.4%.
They were 9-28 for 32.1% from the three-point line.
And 9-16 for 56.3% from the free-throw line.
They were outrebounded by the Golden Bulls 42-33.
