Women's Basketball Fall to Virginia Union

BLUEFIELD — The Bluefield State women's basketball team battled but fell to Virginia Union University Monday evening in Ned E. Shott Gymnasium, 64-58.  

Londen Coleman led the Big Blue with 16 points on 6-12 shooting. Coleman added seven rebounds in 34 minutes.

Dani Janutolo followed with 14 points on 7-12 shooting in 35 minutes. Janutolo added nine rebounds and three assists. 

Azariah Binford added 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists in 39 minutes.  

Autumn Spangler also added 10 points and five rebounds in 39 minutes. 

Overall, the team shot 22-53 for 41.5%.

They were 4-18 for 22.2% from the three-point line.

And 10-13 for 76.9% from the free-throw line.

The Big Blue controlled the first quarter. Outscoring the Panthers 18-15. The lead between the Big Blue and the Panthers went back and forth for the first three minutes of the game. 

A three-pointer by Autumn Spangler gave the lead to the Big Blue at the five-minute mark, 11-9. The Big Blue maintained their lead for the remainder of the quarter.

Although, the Panthers outscored the Big Blue in the second quarter. The Big Blue never allowed the Panther to take the lead. Azariah Binford put up a good layup in the paint to put the Big Blue up by ten over the Panthers with about 4:30 remaining. 

The Panthers tied it up at with:09 to go in the second quarter after a three-pointer by Chatori Tyler. Ny Langley got a little too excited after and committed a foul sending Gabrielle Thomas to shoot two. Thomas put both in and the Big Blue went into halftime up by two, 31-29.  

The Big Blue came back out and let the Panther score seven straight points to begin the third quarter. The Big Blue got back in it when Londen Coleman drove in for a good layup in the paint. 

The Big Blue took back their lead with a steal from Dani Janutolo and a good layup in the paint. Putting the Big Blue up, 43-42.

The Big Blue outscored the Panthers 19-15. As result, the Big Blue lead the Panther s going into the fourth quarter, 50-44. 

The fourth quarter started much like the third, scoreless for the Big Blue. The Big Blue only scored eight points in the fourth quarter versus the Panther's 20.
