Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University Football took down the previously unbeaten Apprentice School Builders 22-19 on Saturday.
After Bluefield State failing to score on the opening drive, the Builders got on the board early off of a 38-yard field goal. The Builders scored the first touchdown of the game to extend their lead 9-0 with 17 seconds left in the first quarter.
After a dropped snap from the Builders, the Big Blue gained possession of the ball on the Builders five-yard line. Quarterback Devan Freedland completed the five-yard pass to Wesley Beckett followed by the extra point from Braxton VanScoy to put the Big Blue down by two going into the half.
After the Builders drove down to the BSU 21 to open up the second half, a field goal extended their lead 12-7. The Big Blue closed out the third quarter with an 82-yard touchdown pass by Freedland to Timothy Henderson to take the one-point lead. The Big Blue extended their lead 15-12 after Khyon Smith ran in the two-point conversion.
The Builders took back the lead (19-15) in the fourth, but the Big Blue answered with a 28-yard pass to K. Smith on the next play to get the 22-19 advantage over the Builders. With 1:27 remaining and the Builders having possession, the Big Blue sealed the win after an interception by Xavier Jarmon.
