WBB Drops Heartbreaker at Virginia Union

Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball dropped a road contest against Virginia Union University 61-60 on Friday.

Rori Cox led the Big Blue in scoring with 23 points followed by Londen Coleman with 15. Gabrielle Thomas collected six rebounds on the night.

Virginia Union took the early four-point advantage, but a layup from Azariah Binford and a three from Thomas put the Big Blue ahead by one. Virginia Union answered with four consecutive points to take the three-point lead into the second quarter. The Big Blue battled back to tie it at 13, but Virginia Union would outscore the Big Blue 18-5 to go into the half with the 31-18 advantage.

Virginia Union maintained the ten-point advantage for majority of the third quarter, but the Big Blue offense came alive after a trip to the line from Coleman sparked a seven-point scoring run. VUU scored with 12 seconds left in the quarter, but Katrina Davis found Coleman downlow for two at the buzzer to pull within two going into the final quarter. The Big Blue opened up the fourth quarter with a fastbreak layup from Binford to even the score at 42. After back-and-forth buckets, the Big Blue built a lead of six with 26 seconds remaining. Virginia Union evened the score at 60 with 15 second left in play. A Big Blue foul with one second left sent VUU to the line to take the one-point victory over Bluefield State.
