PETERSBURG, Virginia — The Bluefield State women's basketball team fell to Virginia State Univesity Monday, Feb. 7 in the Multipurpose Arena.
Alexus Tucker led with 21 points off the bench on 5-11 shooting in 16 minutes.
Autumn Spangler followed with 12 points on 4-11 shooting in 36 minutes.
Londen Coleman added nine points and six rebounds in 36 minutes.
Katrina Davis added eight rebounds in 34 minutes.
Azariah Binford added seven assists in 36 minutes.
Overall, the team shot 19-49 for 38.8%.
They were 10-26 for 38.5% from the three-point line.
And 14-15 for 93.3.7% from the free-throw line.
The Big Blue and the Trojans battled back and forth the lead. A layup by Dani Janutolo gave the Big Blue the lead at the 4-minute mark, 7-6.
The next two minutes remained scoreless for both the Big Blue and the Trojans. Alexus Tucket drew the foul, sending her to the line to shoot two. Tucker made both extending the Big Blue lead, 9-6.
The Trojans regained the lead with:56 left with two good free throws by Shayla Sweeney, 13-12. Tucker drained a three from the top of the key with an assist by Azariah Binford to give the Big Blue the lead at the end of the first quarter, 15-13.
The Big Blie maintained their lead the majority of the second quarter. With 2:24 left Sweeney completed a layup in the paint to give the Trojans the lead, 30-29. The Trojans outscored the Big Blue 25-16 in the second quarter sending them into halftime with the lead, 38-31.
The Trojans come back out into the third quarter extending their lead by 10 with 8:22 to go. The Big Blue struggled to find themselves ahead again.
The fourth quarter was another uphill battle. The Trojans outscored the Big Blue 40-8. The Trojans also benefited from the Big Blue turnovers by grabbing 14 points.
