The Big Blue Drop Three Game Weekend Series to Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pennsylvania -- The Bluefield State baseball team dropped a three-game series against Millersville University Saturday and Sunday at Cooper Park.  

Game 1:

Despite a six-run deficit in the fourth inning, the Big Blue had an opportunity to come back, eventually falling 6-4 to Millersville University on Saturday. 

Bluefield State scored four runs in the failed comeback on a single by Ty Sizemore in the sixth, a single by Garrett Hladilek in the sixth, a single by Taylor Tibbs in the sixth, and a sacrifice fly by Hladilek in the eighth.

The Big Blue couldn't keep up with the Marauders early in the game. Millersville scored on a single by Cole Houser and a single by Tyler Wright in the second inning.

The Marauders fired up the offense in the second inning. Houser helped add two runs with a single two-RBI.

The Big Blue put up three runs in the sixth inning. Bluefield State put the pressure on, lead by singles by Sizemore, Hladilek, and Tibbs.

Ben Wilchacky earned the win for the Marauders. Wilchacky surrendered three runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out seven. Kris Pirozzi and Nate Young entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Noah Lemon took the loss for Bluefield State Baseball. The righthander went two innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out one, and walking one.

The Big Blue totaled ten hits. Cole Cote and Jordan Varela-Payne each collected multiple hits. Cote went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead.

Game 2:

Bluefield State fell behind early and couldn't come back in an 18-0 loss to Millersville University on Sunday. The Marauders scored on a groundout by Keegan Soltis in the first inning and a single by Tyler Wright in the second inning.

The Big Blue struggled to contain the high-powered Marauders offense, giving up 18 runs.

A single by CJ Cooper in the third inning was a positive for the Big Blue. 

Colby Gromlich was credited with the victory for the Marauders. The ace went four innings, allowing zero runs on one hit and striking out seven. Evan Rishell and Jacob Paulishak entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Zane Eggleston took the loss for the Big Blue. The pitcher went three innings, allowing eight runs on five hits and striking out two.

Game 3:

Bluefield State once again fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 17-11 loss to Millersville University in game two on Sunday. The Marauders scored on a home run by Jimmy Losh, a single by Luke Trainer, a single by John Seibert, a grand slam by Sam Morris, a double by Trainer, and a single by Keegan Soltis in the first inning.

Despite the loss, the Big Blue collected 15 hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, the Marauders had 21 hits on the way to victory.

Millersville opened up scoring in the first inning when Losh hit a solo homer.

The Big Blue scored seven runs in the sixth inning. Bluefield State batters contributing to the big inning included Cole Cote, Ty Sizemore, Ethan Wilkins, and Taylor Tibbs, all driving in runs in the frame.

Conor Cook pitched the Marauders to victory. Conor lasted four innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out six and walking one. 

A number of pitchers entered the game as relief, with Morris, Christian Wingard, Garet Blankenbiller, and Kris Pirozzi all securing outs and ultimately the victory.

Jacob Matheney took the loss for the Big Blue. The lefty lasted two-thirds of an inning, allowing eight hits and ten runs while striking out one and walking one.

The Big Blue socked two home runs on the day. Sizemore went deep in the fifth inning. Wilkins put one out in the sixth inning.

The Big Blue will host West Virginia Tech in a single nine-inning game Monday, Mar. 21. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
