BLUEFIELD -- The Bluefield State baseball team defeated West Virginia University Tech in walk-off fashion Monday evening at Bowen Field, 11-10.
The Big Blue took an early in the bottom of the first after a two-run home run by Cole Cote making it a 2-0 game. The Big Blue added two more runs in the bottom of the second after an RBI double by Cj Cooper bringing in Garrett Hladilek.
Cooper scored on a stolen base by Varela-Payne making it a 4-0 game. The Golden Bears got on the board after scoring two runs in the top of the sixth after an RBI double and a sac fly cutting the Big Blue lead in half.
In the top of the seventh Tech would add four more runs on the board on a two-run RBI single and two RBI singles giving them a 6-4 lead over Bluefield state. The Big Blue would answer back with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a throwing error that brought in Hladelik.
Later in the inning, Varela-Payne had an RBI triple that brought in Cooper. Varela-Payne would score on a passed ball and Cote would later hit another two-run home run giving the Big Blue a 9-6 lead over the Golden Bears.
In the top of the eighth, the Golden Bears would add a run on an RBI double play which made it a 9-7 game. The Big Blue answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth Taylor Tibbs would score on pass ball which gave them a 10-7 lead heading into the ninth. Tech would score three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game after a single and an error by the Big Blue defense making it a 10 all game.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Big Blue would walk off against the Golden Bears after Brayden Merrick had an RBI double that would bring in Varela-Payne to end the game.
