BLUEFIELD -- The Bluefield State softball team swept Shaw University in a doubleheader Monday afternoon, grabbing their first doubleheader win of the season.
Game 1:
Destiny Beck scored on a throwing error to put the Bears on the board first. Kennedy Warbritton doubled to center field for an RBI. Calla Cooksey doubled down the leftfield line for a two-RBI.
Madison Thompson singled through the right side for RBI and advanced to second on a throwing error, the Big Blue went up in the third 4-1.
The Bears added one run in the fourth on a stolen base by Regina DeDecker. DeDecker advanced to home on another throwing error by the Big Blue defense.
The Big Blue added their final run in the fifth. Kylie Nelson reached first on a fielder's choice but collected an RBI, 5-2.
Madison Thompson (3-8) took the win for Bluefield State. She gave up four runs -- off of six hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The Bears pushed for a comeback in the sixth, scoring two runs before the Big Blue defense forced three outs.
Game 2:
The Big Blue closed out Monday with an 11-7 win in game 2 of the doubleheader.
Once again the Bears struck first in the first inning. Janasia Johnson bunted to the pitcher for an RBI. Nataya Truitt scored on a wild pitch, the Bears went 2-0.
The Big Blue answered with five runs in the bottom of the first. Calla Cooksey doubled to left field for an RBI. Kylie Nelson singled to center field for another RBI, tying the game 2-2.
Madison Thompson kept the bats going singling to right field, scoring Emma Crawford. Hannah Fisher reached on a fielding error after hitting a sac bunt. Kylie Nelson scored on a throwing error.
Thompson scored the final run in the inning on a wild pitch, 5-2. The Bears scored one in the third. The Big Blue added three more in the third.
The Bears tried battling back in the top of the third adding three runs to their score. The Big Blue continued to pull away adding two more in the fifth.
Bluefield State improved to 5-20, with the split. The Bears improved to 2-22.
