Baseball Breaks Strikeout Single Season Record in Split Home Series With UVA-Wise

BLUEFIELD -- Bluefield State Baseball split a two-game series with UVA-Wise in a mid-week matchup Wednesday afternoon at Bowen Field. 

Game 1

The Big Blue got on the board first after Garrett Hladilek doubled to center field to bring in Jordan Varela-Payne. A batter later Ty Sizemore drove in Hladilek on double to left field to take a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Big Blue added three more runs on an RBI double by JR McRee that brought in Sebastian Ortega, an RBI single by Hladilek that brought in McRee, and an RBI ground out that brought in Varela-Payne, 5-0. 

In the top of the third, the Cavaliers would unload for 10 runs to take a 10-5 lead over the Big Blue. The Cavaliers added a run in the fourth on an RBI double that brought in Cole Harness. The Big Blue added three runs in the bottom half of the inning after Hladilek had a two-RBI double that brought in Varela-Payne and JR McRee

Cole Cote had an RBI single that brought in Hladilek, 11-8. The Cavaliers added two more runs in the fifth. JR McRee scored in the fifth for the Big Blue to make it a 13-9 game. In the bottom of the seventh Varela-Payne had a two-run home run to give the Big Blue their final two runs of the game. 

Game 2

The Big Blue took a 2-0 lead in the fifth after an RBI single by Sebastian Ortega, driving in Taylor Tibbs, and an RBI triple by Cj Cooper that brought in Ortega. 

The Cavaliers would tie the game in the sixth after an RBI double by DJ Dickson that brought in Tyler Campbell. DJ Dickson also scored in the inning making it a 2-2 game. 

In the bottom half of the inning, the Big Blue added two more runs on a two-RBI double by Ty Sizemore that brought in Erik Romero and Garrett Hladilek for the final two runs of the game.

The Big Blue will travel to UVA-Wise Tuesday, April 19 for a single nine-inning game. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
