WISE, Virginia -- The Bluefield State baseball team defeated the University of Virginia at Wise Tuesday at Burchell Stallard Field, 16-11.
The Cavaliers got on the board in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by Cole Harness. Followed by an RBI single and a wild pitch to take a 5-0 lead over the Big Blue.
The Cavaliers added another run in the second on a solo home run by Clay Taylor. In the top of the third, the Big Blue got on the board on an RBI double by Sebastian Ortega bringing in Roman Moore.
The Big Blue added seven runs in the fourth. Ty Sizemore and Garrett Hladilek both hit homered to leftfield. Jordan Varela-Payne hit an RBI single to take the lead, 8-6. Hladilek had an RBI double in the sixth that brought in Ortega to add to the Big Blue lead.
In the top of the seventh, the Big Blue added three more runs to the board on a two-RBI double by Ortega and on a throwing error by the Cavaliers to make it a 12-6 game. In the top of the eighth, the Big Blue added four runs on two walks, a fielder's choice, and an RBI single by CJ Cooper.
The Cavaliers add six runs in the ninth but fell short to the Big Blue with a final score of 16-11.
