Baseball Breaks Single Season Record Wins in Doubleheader Win Over the Trojans

ETTRICK,Virginia -- Bluefield State Baseball grabbed the first two wins of a four game series against Virginia State Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1:

The Big Blue took an early lead in the first inning on an RBI triple by Cole Cote, driving in Garrett Hladilek. The Big Blue added another run in the first after a passed ball allowed Cote to score, giving the Big Blue a 2-0 lead. 

In the top of the fourth, Brayden Merrick had a two-rbi double that brought in Ty Sizemore and JR McRee to extend their lead over the Trojans, 4-0. The Big Blue defense kept the Trojans scoreless the entire first game.

Stephen Hedgepeth got the win for the Big Blue. Hedgepeth allowed no runs off of three hits. 

Game 2:

The Big Blue finished the day with a win over the Trojans. Cole Cote started things off with an RBI single, bringing in Jordan Varela-Payne. At the top of the second Brayden Merrick scored on a passed ball to make it a 2-0 game over the Trojans. 

After being shutout for 10 innings, the trojans got on the board after Chase Moore had an RBI single that brought in a run to make it a 2-1 game. The Trojans added another run on a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth, 2-2. 

The Big Blue added three runs in the fifth after Garrett Hladilek had an RBI single and Taylor Tibbs had a two-RBI double to make it a 5-2 ball game. At the top of the sixth, Varela-Payne tripled for the Big Blue scoring JR McRee

A batter later, Varela-Payne would score on an RBI groundout by Hladilek to extend their lead to 7-2 over the Trojans. The Trojans answered back with a run of their own after Davi Johnson singled to bring in a run making it a 7-3 score. 

In the seventh, Tibbs drove in a run for the Big Blue on a sac fly to centerfield, with CJ Cooper scoring to make it a 8-3 game.

The big blue looks will face the Trojans Sunday, April 24 in another doubeheader. The first pitch is set for noon.
