Baseball Captures First 20 Win Season in School History, in Weekend Series Against Virginia State

ETTRICK, Virginia -- Bluefield State Baseball completed a four game weekend series Sunaday afternoon against Virginia State. The Big Blue finished three for four against the Trojans. 

Game 1:

 In the top of the third, the Big Blue got on the board on an RBI single by Jordan Varela-Payne, driving in CJ Cooper. Later in the inning, Cole Cote brought in Varela-Payne on a sac fly to add to their lead. 

Ty Sizemore also brought in a run after he singled to bring in Garrett Hladilek, making it a 3-0 game. In the fifth inning, the Big Blue plated four runs on a two-run home run by Sizemore, an RBI double by Cote, and a sac fly by Hladilek, 7-0. 

Cooper and Varela-Payne both had an RBI single in the seventh inning for the Big Blue to extend their lead to 9-0. The Trojans scored one run in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball. 

Game 2:

The Trojans scored first on an RBI groundout to take an early 1-0 lead. In the third, they added two more runs to their lead on a two-RBI single making it a 3-0 lead over the Big Blue. 

The Big Blue got a run in the top of the fourth on an error that allowed Taylor Tibbs to score. In the top of the seventh, the Big Blue scored four runs on an error by the centerfielder which allowed Garrett Hladilek and Jordan Varela-Payne to score. Roman Moore and Tibbs both had an RBI walk to plate two more runs to take a 5-3 lead. 

The Trojans would come back and score three runs in the bottom of the seventh after a two-RBI single by Ricky Jones. Jayle Lovett would deliver the game-winner on a single to the pitcher which allowed Ricky Jones to score, giving the Trojans the win.

The Big Blue will host Alice Lloyd Sunday, May 1 for senior day. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m..
