Bluefield, WV - Bluefield University Volleyball took down Johnson & Wales University Wildcats 3 – 1 in home opener.
After the Big Blue took the first two sets, Johnson & Wales battled back to take the third before the Big Blue bounced back in the fourth to record its first win of the 2022 season.
After falling behind 13-9, the Big Blue scored nine consecutive points to take the 18-13 lead. This included five aces from Kateryna Dashevska, who also secured her first double-double. The Wildcats fought back 23-21 before a kill from Lindsey Neal and ace from Veronica Butler secured set one 25-21.
The second set was a solid performance by the Big Blue, taking the set 25-9. After starting out with four kills by Neal (3) and Dashevska, the Big Blue jumped out to an early lead 14-1. The Wildcats would score eight before the Big Blue would take the set 25-9.
The Wildcats would bounce back to take set three 25-18. The Wildcats would jump out to their largest lead of the night 16-8 before taking the fourth set 25-18 to force a fourth set.
After jumping out to a 10-5 lead over the Wildcats, two kills by BriShaela McHaney and Dashevska and a block from Carly Pickerd extended the Big Blue lead 13-5. Later in the set, the Big Blue would score four consecutive from two kills by Dashevska, one from McHaney and an ace from Dalak to make it 22-12. A block from Allyson Martin and McHaney and a kill from Neal pushed the Big Blue to take set four 25-17 and the victory over the Wildcats.
"We saw a lot of great things from our young team today. Aydan did a good job running our offense. Kate and Lindsey did a great job leading our offense with 19 and 16 kills," said Head Coach Savanna Hammond. "We are very excited to see where this team can go this year!"
