Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University Volleyball took down Virginia Union University 3-1 at home on Wednesday.
Bluefield State grabbed the lead early in set one, 9-5, after back-to-back kills from Allyson Martin, an ace from Taylor Sams and two VUU miscues. VUU fought back within two 16-14, but the Big Blue went on to score nine of the next 12 points, including a final point kill from Kateryna Dashevska to take the set 25-17.
Both teams battled in set two, tying up the score eight times. The Big Blue went on a 4-0 run to take the lead 19-14 late in the set. A miscue late in the set from BSU, tied up the set 24-24. VUU would score the next two points to take set two 26-24.
The Big Blue started the third set strong, outscoring VUU 7-1. The Big Blue would extend their lead to ten, 18-8, after a four-point run lead by a kill from Dashevska. An ace from Veronica Butler brought the Big Blue to game point, followed by a kill from Dashevska to take set three Dashevska.
After falling behind 3-0 to begin set four, the Big Blue scored five consecutive points led by a kill from Martin and Lindsey Neal. VUU took back the lead, but a Big Blue 7-0 scoring run gave the Big Blue the 13-10. Later in the set, VUU tied it up 14-14. The Big Blue ran away with the set, outscoring VUU 11 to three including two kills from two Neal, one from Aydan Dalak, and three aces from Dashevska. The final point came from a VUU ball handling error to secure set four 25-17 and the match win 3-1.
