WBB Edged Out by West Virginia State

Bluefield, WV- Bluefield State women's basketball fell to West Virginia State University 101-93 on Monday at Ned E. Shott Gymnasium.

Rori Cox and Aerihna Afoa combined for 42 points and 13 rebounds with Cox going 10-10 from the line.  Londen Coleman added 16 points on the day.

West Virginia State opened play scoring the first nine points of the night before a layup from Dani Janutolo broke up the scoring run. The Big Blue pulled within one with two minutes left after Azariah Binford found Coleman in the paint for two. WVSU scored back-to-back to go into the second quarter with the five-point lead.

The Yellow Jacks built a lead of ten, but the Big Blue scored nine consecutive points to cut the lead to one midway through the quarter. After trading back and forth buckets for the rest of the quarter, the Yellow Jacks took the four-point lead over the Big Blue into the half.

The Big Blue took their first lead of the afternoon after opening the half with back-to-back threes from Essence Cowan and Binford. The Yellow Jacks answered to even the score at 50, but a three by Binford put the Big Blue up three. The Yellow Jacks offense would build a lead of seven with six minutes left in the third. A trip to the line for Cox would even the score at 71 but the Yellow Jackets would hit a three with seconds remaining to go into the final quarter with the 74-71 lead.

Two free throws by Cox and a jumper from Coleman put the Big Blue ahead by one. After WVSU built a lead of 11 midway through the quarter, the Big Blue would pull within four at the 1:35 mark. The Yellow Jacks would go on to score four to come away with the 101-93 victory over the Big Blue.
