Five Big Blue Earn All-CIAA Team Honors

Bluefield, WV – In the first year back in the CIAA, five Big Blue were named to 2023 CIAA All-CIAA Teams. TJ Gunter, Justin Campbell, and Jaylyn Norris were named to the All-Conference Second Team and Isiah Teal and Daniel Hutton were named to the Offensive All-CIAA Rookie Team.

Senior TJ Gunter (LB) from Detroit, Michigan, despite missing some games due to injury, Gunter finished the regular season with 46 tackles (28 solo, 18 assists), six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Gunter had his best game of the season against Virginia State with 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Gunter made program history for the Big Blue by being the first Big Blue invited to the HBCU Pigskin Showdown.

Justin Campbell (DB) from Buffalo, NY collected 50 tackles on the year (37 solo, 13 assists) and 1.5 tackles for loss. In the final game of the season, Campbell had a season high of 11 tackles (9 solo, 2 assists).

Jaylyn Norris (DL) from Pensacola, Florida, had 33 tackles on the year, 19 solo and 14 assists. Norris had eight tackles for loss on the year and 6 sacks. Norris had eight tackles in the season game of the season with two tackles for loss and one sack.

Freshman Isiah Teal (QB) from Jacksonville, Florida, completed 113 out of 225 attempts on the year. Teal threw for 1,419 yards with 13 touchdowns.

Freshman Daniel Hutton (K) from Chilhowie, VA, punted 29 times for 1,773 total yards. Hutton averaged 36.2 per punt.

"Congrats to all of our guys for the CIAA postseason recognition!" said head coach Tony Coaxum. "It's an honor to have the other coaches recognize the talented young men we have here at Bluefield State in our first year back home in the conference. With the exception of TJ, all of these guys will be returning.  We are excited about our future!"
