Bluefield, WV – A double-double by Alexyss Newman led the Big Blue in their 86-67 victory over Central State on Wednesday.
Katrina Davis opened the night with a corner three to take the early lead. After a trip to the line for Newman, the Big Blue built a lead of 10 midway through the first quarter. The Big Blue closed out the first with a five-point run to take the 27-13 into the second.
Back-to-back buckets from Drea Betts extended their lead 33-15. Central State cut the Big Blue to 14 midway through the half, but the Big Blue answered with seven consecutive free throws to get the 19 point advantage.
After the Big Blue went into the half with the 18-point lead, Central State opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run to cut the Big Blue lead to eight. A trio of two-point plays from Azariah Binford and two from Newman took the Big Blue into the final quarter ahead 58-44.
Central State cut the lead to 14 in the fourth, but were outscored by the Big Blue 28-23.
Alexyss Newman led the Big Blue with 31 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and one block on the night. Sincere Roberts added 13 with Jayla Sample adding 12.
