Wise, VA – Bluefield State University women's basketball forced 23 turnovers in their 60-55 victory over UVA-Wise.
Alexyss Newman, who secured her second double-double of the season, got the Big Blue on the board first with a three. The Cavaliers took the lead with two minutes left, but the Big Blue closed out the first quarter on a 7-2 run to take the two-point lead.
The Cavaliers opened up the second quarter with four points to take back the lead. Both teams continued to battle with the score being tied four times throughout the quarter before the Cavaliers hit a layup with two seconds left to take the two-point lead over the Big Blue into the half.
The Big Blue came out of the half with a midrange jumper by Newman to even the score at 24. Going into the last three minutes of the quarter with the score tied at 34, back-to-back buckets from Newman and Icesis Nwafor put the Big Blue ahead by six. The Cavaliers cut the Big Blue lead to four going into the final quarter of play.
The Big Blue built their largest lead of the night, 46-39, after a three by Newman. The Cavaliers battled back to take the one-point lead, but the Big Blue would go on an 8-0 scoring run to take back the lead. The Cavaliers would cut the Big Blue deficit to three, but two successful trips to the line for Sincere Roberts would seal the 60-55 victory for the Big Blue.
Alexyss Newman led all players with 22 points, ten rebounds, five steals, and two assists on the night. The Big Blue went 12-12 from the line and 36% from the field.
