Catungal Wins First Individual Wrestling Title in Women’s Program’s Inaugural Season

Mount Olive, NC - California native Hannah Mae Catungal put on a dominant performance on her way to the 155 lb. title at the Women's Trojan Open hosted by Mount Olive University. The Big Blue wrestler spent less than 5 minutes in total over the course of 4 matches on her march to the championship, with falls in the times of 1:30, :16, and 1:31, and a technical fall in less than a minute in the final!

Bluefield State also had a semi-finalist in Malia Cook, who scored the fastest fall in the tournament with a quarterfinal win in only 13 seconds. Cook had a pair of falls on the day and finished in 4th place.

Freshman Charniece McClarence also scored a pair of pins in her first collegiate tournament. Relying on aggressive hand fighting Charniece used a pair of headlocks to pin a pair of opponents from Mount Olive to earn her first two collegiate wins.

Competing unattached while red-shirting, Kiley McClain pinned her way into the semi-final at 191 lbs, where she fell victim on a last second takedown to fall into the consolation bracket. Wrestling back, McClain used a trip straight to her opponent's back, and a leg attack counter for a pair of falls to finish in third place.

"I'm super proud of Hannah for her performance today. She was aggressive, explosive and didn't hold back. It was among the most dominant performances I have ever had the honor of getting to sit in the corner for" said Coach Sam Gardner. "I'm proud of all the women. We wrestled hard, even in the losses. Serveral of our athletes were on the cusp of winning, but came up a bit short, in part because of the transition from Folkstyle in high school to freestyle in college. Once we get a better feeling for making the correct reactions to counters these ladies will jump levels. Coach Richards did a good job identifying talented and dedicated athletes to bring to Bluefield State's first women's wrestling team. I'm fortunate I'm getting the chance to work with these kids on a daily basis. The future is bright for this program."
