Danville, VA - The Big Blue men's wrestling team won a pair of duals to win the consolation pool at the Cougar Duals, hosted by Averett University on Saturday.
Several strong individual performances were not enough to propel the Bluefield State wrestlers into the championship bracket of the team dual format event, but in the consolation pool the team showed the intestinal fortitude and toughness necessary to defeat Waynesburg University and Patrick Henry College to finish the semester on a strong note.
Enrique Sanchez won four of five matches today, scoring a pin, a forfeit, a major decision, and a technical fall to put together a team leading 10-3 record. Luke Roberts scored a pair of pins and earned a forfeit on the day. Roberts second fall of the day clinched the Big Blue victory over Waynesburg. Sebastiano Spina recent spate improved performance continued today, as he earned three victories to help his team. Jacob Latorre won three matches today at 157 lbs., capping of the day with a dramatic first period pin against Patrick Henry. Freshman Landon Marquis had a pair of wins on the day, including a pin in his final bout of the day.
"It felt good to get the pressure off our shoulders and earn a couple wins today," said head coach Sam Gardner. "We are so young and thin in numbers that we are realistically at a big numerical disadvantage every week, but we don't approach these matches with that attitude. Our guys are going to attack, fight and scrap the whole time. We showed some improvement in the areas we've focused on in practice, but we still aren't as consistent as we need to be in these skills to win like we hope to. These are good kids, and in time they'll be winning with great regularity."
