Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University men's basketball fell to Shaw University in double overtime 95-92 on Thursday. The Big Blue move to 5-8 (2-2 CIAA) on the year and the Bears move to 4-3 (1-1 CIAA).
The Bears scored the first bucket three minutes into play, but a three and two free throws from Jordan Hinds put the Big Blue in the lead. The Bears answered with a three of their own, but another three from Hinds put the Big Blue back on top and marked Hinds 1,000 career points. Midway through the half a three from Clay Baldwin built the Big Blue lead to eight. A layup from the Bears pulled them within one of the Big Blue. Baldwin completed the and one to extend the Big Blue lead to four, but a trip to the lien for the Bears cut the Big Blue lead to two going into the half.
Four minutes into the second half, the Bears took the one-point lead over the Big Blue. A three from J. Caleb Slawinski gave the Big Blue the 63-58 advantage at the 9:25 mark. The Bears took the five point lead with two minutes left to play, but a three from Daron Traylor and a layup from Jaylen Bernard tied it up at 74 with 52 seconds left. A Bears layup put them ahead by two, but a layup by Traylor with 11 seconds left to forced overtime.
The Bears built a three-point lead in overtime, but a three from Traylor evened the score followed by a layup from Hinds to put the Big Blue ahead by two. The Bears scored the next four points to take the lead, but a layup from Ja'Mere Redus with 35 forced double overtime.
The Big Blue built a lead of four after two free throws from Bernard with 1:57 left in the overtime period, but the Bears the next seven points to take down the Big Blue 95-92.
Jordan Hinds led the Big Blue with 27 points and ten rebounds, two steals and one block on the night. Daron Traylor (20), Clay Baldwin (14), Jaylen Bernard (12) and Ja'Mere Bernard (11) each came away with double digit points.
