Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball battled with Shaw University on Thursday, falling 57-54. The Big Blue fall to 8-2 (2-1 CIAA) and the Bears move to 5-4 (1-1 CIAA).
The Big Blue got on the board first after Azariah Binford found Alexyss Newman in the paint for a quick bucket, but the Bears with an eight-point run to take the 6-2 lead midway through the quarter. A three from Katrina Davis would pull the Big Blue within three, but the Bears would score the last five points to take the 15-7 lead into the second quarter. The Bears opened the second with four points to extend their lead to 12. Later in the half, the Big Blue scored ten consecutive points to even the score at 23 going into the half.
A trip to the line for Sincere Roberts and Jayla Sample gave the Big Blue the four-point lead coming out of the half. A three from Binford built the Big Blue lead to ten with three minutes left in the third quarter. The Bears would pull within four of the Big Blue going into the fourth quarter. The Bears would open the fourth with back-to-back threes to take the 44-42 lead, but a layup from Icesis Nwafor tied it up at 44. After trading the lead back and forth, a three from Katrina Davis put the Big Blue ahead 54-52 with one minute left to play. The Bears answered with a three and a layup to take down the Big Blue 57-54.
Azariah Binford led all scorers with 18 points with Alexyss Newman secured the double-double with 14 rebounds and 13 points.
