Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University men's basketball came away with the 88-85 victory over Wingate University. The Big Blue move to 2-6 on the year and Wingate moves to 4-3 on the year.
Wingate struck first, but the Big Blue answered with five points from J. Caleb Slawinski and two from Ja'Mere Redus to take the 7-3 lead. Wingate battled back and built an 11-point lead with 4:21 left in the first half. A midrange jumper by Jordan Hinds evened the score at 44 followed by a three-point play by Jaylen Bernard to take the three-point lead. A trip to the line for Wingate cut the Big Blue lead to one going into the half.
Wingate took back the lead to open the half but a three fom Bernard sparked a seven-point run to take the 54-48 lead. At the 8:44 mark, the Big Blue built their largest lead of that night, 73-65. Wingate would put within one with 4:39 on the clock, but Bernard scored the next five points to pull away from the Bulldogs. With 15 seconds left, a Bulldogs layup pulled them within two of the Big Blue. A free throw from Clay Baldwin sealed the 88-85 victory for the Big Blue.
Clay Baldwin led all scorers with 20 points. Jordan Hinds and Jaylen Bernard both came away with 18 points each followed by J. Caleb Slawinski with 11.
