Bluefield, VA – Bluefield State University softball fell to Winston-Salem State University in game one 7-5, but took game two 12-6 on Wednesday at Graham Rec Park.
Game One
The Big Blue struck first, after Paige Whittington and Emma Crawford drew back-to-back walks in the bottom of the first followed by a single from Lexi Shadowens to bring in the first run of the day. The Rams took the lead in the top of the third after scoring three, but the Big Blue Crawford brought two across the plate after a center field homerun to even the score at three. After WSSU added one in the fifth and two in the sixth, the Big Blue pulled within one in the bottom of the inning. Hannah Fisher was hit by the pitch and later advanced on a passed ball. Taylor Henson singled to right field followed by an error from WSSU to bring in two. The Rams extended their lead 7-5 in the seventh to take the victory over the Big Blue.
Game Two
After the Rams scored one to open up game two, the Big Blue rallied with two outs to bring home five. Crawford singled up the middle followed by a homerun from Bella Coffman to take the lead. An error by the Rams put a runner on first followed by a single from Shadowens. Henson singled up the middle to bring in one followed by a double down the left field line by La'Naeyah Ayers to bring in two. The Rams added another in the second, but the Big Blue extended their lead 9-2 in the bottom of the inning. Whittington led off the inning with a single and later a stolen base and was brought home after a double down the line from Calla Cooksey. Crawford drew the walk and Coffman hit her second homerun of the game to add two for the Big Blue. A single up the middle by Coffman brought in another for the Big Blue in the fourth. The Rams added three in the fifth, but the Big Blue added two in the sixth. Coffman, who went 4-4 in game two, singled up the middle to bring home Whittington and an error by the Rams brought in another to take the 12-5 lead. The Rams added one in the seventh, but the Big Blue completed the double play to take the 12-6 victory.
