Mars Hill, NC – Bluefield State University volleyball split day two of the Tony Fontanelle Memorial Tournament, taking down King University 3-0 and falling to Coker University 3-0 on Saturday.
The Big Blue jumped out to a 9-4 lead after a kill from Jannice Lynch. King battled back to tie the score at 19 late in the set, but the Big Blue answered with three in a row, including two kills from Imani stokes and Lynch, to pull away 22-19. Two back-to-back kills from BriShaela McHaney brought the Big Blue to game point and a kill from Lynch secured set one 25-21.
Midway through the set, back-to-back kills from Kateryna Dashevska and Allyson Martin extended the Big Blue lead 14-5. King would score three consecutive to pull within five, but they could not hold off the Big Blue who would take set two 25-16.
Three kills from Stokes and an ace from Dashevska started off set three to give the Big Blue the early lead. After keeping the lead for majority of the set, King attempted a late rally to put within three, but the Big Blue answered with three of the last four points to take the victory over King University.
The Big Blue started game two with back-to-back points, but Coker answered with five to take the 5-2 lead. The Big Blue pulled within one (12-11) after back-to-back kills from Dashevska but Coker extended their lead. The Big Blue attempted a late set rally to pull within 24-22, but Coker answered with the final point to take set one.
After Coker evened the score at 6, the Big Blue answered with three in a row to take the 9-6 lead. Coker took the lead late in the set after a three-point run of their own. The Big Blue went on to outscore Coker 8-3 to pull ahead 24-19. Coker answered with the next five to tie it up at 24, but a kill from Big Blue Stokes put the Big Blue up one. After tying the score at 25, 26 and 27 Coker took the last two points to take set two 29-27 over the Big Blue.
A kill from Caely Banger evened the score at 4 in set three. After Coker regained the lead, back-to-back kills from Lindsey Neal put the Big Blue back on top 14-13. A four point stretch for Coker put them ahead 23-17. After two miscues from Coker pulled the Big Blue within four, Coker answered with the final two points to secure the win over the Big Blue.
