Dunbar, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell to West Virginia State in a non-conference matchup, 80-67. The Big Blue move to 8-4 (2-2 CIAA) on the year with West Virginia State moving to 6-6 (3-3 MEC).
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 8-2 lead two minutes into play, but a three from Azariah Binford gave the Big Blue the 9-8 lead at the 6:14 mark. After three lead changes, a trip to the line for Gabrielle Thomas evened the score at 22 with less then a minute left in the first quarter. A jumper from Jayla Sample gave the Big Blue the two-point lead, but the Yellow Jackets evened the score to go into the second tied 24-24. The Yellow Jackets built up at 12-point lead with three minutes left in the second. The Big Blue cut their lead to nine after a layup from Sincere Roberts, but the Yellow Jackets took the 47-36 lead into the half.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 15 at the 7:35 mark, but the Big Blue began to chip away. The Big Blue closed out the third quarter with a jumper from Thomas to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to ten going into the final quarter. Two minutes into the quarter a three from Thomas pulled the Big Blue within six of the Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets would outscore the Big Blue 21-18 in the fourth quarter to take down the Big Blue 80-67.
Jayla Sample led the Big Blue with 16 points and nine rebounds with Sincere Roberts adding 13 points, six steals and five rebounds. Alexyss Newman secured the double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
