Orangeburg, SC – Bluefield State University women's basketball took down Claflin University 81-65 on Thursday. The Big Blue improved to 9-4 (2-2 CIAA), with the Panthers moving to 4-7 (1-5 CIAA).
The Panthers quickly took the lead after scoring the first five points to open play. Midway through the quarter, a three from Katrina Davis pulled the Big Blue within two. A putback layup from Shalance Montoya evened the score at 16, but the Panthers would take the 20-18 lead into the second.
The Big Blue took back the lead to open the second after a three from Davis. A steal from Sincere Roberts and taken the other way for two gave the Big Blue the 33-25 lead midway through the half. The Panthers pulled within two at the 1:51 mark, but the Big Blue scored the next five points to take the 40-33 advantage into the half.
A three from Azariah Binford extended the Big Blue lead to 11 with 2:27 left in the third. A trip to the line for the Panthers cut the Big Blue lead to eight, but a jumper from Jayla Sample in the final seconds of the third took the Big Blue into the final quarter with the 60-50 lead.
The Big Blue continued to add onto their lead in the fourth, outscoring the Panthers 21-15. The Big Blue had their largest lead of the night after a fastbreak layup from Sample put the Big Blue ahead by 18 with 32 seconds left to play. The Big Blue came away with the 81-65 victory over the Panthers.
Sincere Roberts led all scorers with 27 points with Alexyss Newman adding 21 and Jayla Sample coming away with ten. Newman led all players with nine rebounds on the night.
