Glenville, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell short against Glenville State 77-70 on Saturday.
The Pioneers took the early 19-6 lead, but the Big Blue began to chip away to pull within one to close out the first quarter, 19-18. The Big Blue scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take the 25-19 lead, but the Pioneers would bounce back to take the 32-28 advantage into the half.
The Pioneers built a lead of 11 with 3:50 left in the third quarter, but back-to-back buckets from Tianna Rhodes and Aniyah Quow pulled the Big Blue within seven. A trip to the line for the Pioneers would extend their lead 52-43 going into the fourth.
In the fourth, offense came alive for the Big Blue, scoring 27 points. The Big Blue scored 11 consecutive points to pull within three with 3:31 remaining. Two good free throws by Jasmine Jenkins put the Big Blue down by two with just a minute left to play, the Pioneers answered with the final five points of the game to take down the Big Blue, 77-70.
Jayla Sample led the Big Blue with 20 points, while Jenkins added 17. Rhodes contributed 13 points and five rebounds.
