Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball took down West Virginia Tech 88-69 on Saturday. The Big Blue improve to 6-4 on the year.
Four minutes into the quarter, a three from Jayla Sample sparked a seven-point run for the Big Blue to take the 11-4 lead. The Golden Bears cut the Big Blue lead to one with 1:23 left in the first, but the Big Blue closed out the quarter outscoring the Golden Bears 8-2 (21-14). The Big Blue scored ten consecutive points to extend their lead 33-17. Back-to-back layups from Drea Betts and Sample took the Big Blue into the half with the 50-33 advantage.
Midway through the quarter, back-to-back buckets from Sample and Aniyah Quow extended the Big Blue lead to 23 (59-36). With less then a minute left in the third, the Golden Bears cut the Big Blue deficit to 17, but a trip to the line for Azahrey Drayton-Gill took the Big Blue into the fourth with the 65-46 lead. The Big Blue had their largest lead of the night (27) after two free throws from Tianna Rhodes. The Golden Bears would score the final five points, but couldn't overcome the Big Blue 88-69.
Jasmine Jenkins led the Big Blue with 17 points and eight rebounds. Sample and Rhodes added 15 points each with Drayton-Gill coming away with 11.
